Pastor's Pen

Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you,

and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking

in regard to Christ’s afflictions,

for the sake of his body,

which is the church.

I have become its servant

by the commission God gave me

to present to you the word of God in its fullness—

the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations,

but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people.

To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles

the glorious riches of this mystery,

which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

He is the one we proclaim,

admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom,

so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.

To this end I strenuously contend

with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.”

Colossians 1:24-29 NIV

Dear Friends,

Many of you know that we are in a transition period, adjusting to the SAS (simplified accountability structure) through 2026.  As with any new program or process, we recognize these shifts take time.  So please allow me to refresh your memory in regards to the SAS program…

What is SAS?  The SAS structure of church governance is designed to streamline traditional church committee work.  What was once a multi-committee process for church Finance, Board of Trustees, Staff/Pastor Parish Relations, and Administrative Council, the SAS model blends all of these into just one Leadership Board/Team (LB/LT).*  That is why it is called a simplified structure or one board for governance work.  And, “accountability” refers to the board’s focus on transparency, collaboration and holding one another accountable.

How does SAS work?  When the LB meets each month (the second Sunday of the month following our Fellowship Meal), the LT members wear “multiple hats” (as we address Finance, everyone puts on their “Finance Hat”; or, as we attend to Trustee matters, everyone puts on their “Trustee Hat”; and so on).  One board of 9-members allows us to address matters expeditiously.

Work Teams are key to our success!  To achieve our governance goals (for Finance/Trustees/SPRC/LB), the LB utilizes “Work Teams” (WT).  WT’s engage members or active participants who wish to serve for a defined period of time to complete a specific work project (for one of our LT areas).  Each LB member is assigned to oversee Work Teams, and they report WT progress to the LB.  Volunteers on a Work Team are only assigned a task until that task is completed.  Anyone who wishes to serve on a WT is encouraged and welcome to do so, and the fun thing is that you need not feel you are tied to an unending project or task.  This also frees more volunteers to work on our wonderful nurture, outreach or witness (NOW) committees that make a real difference in the wider community.

What are the NOW Committees?  Where the SAS LB & WT’s focus on tasks, transparency and accountability in areas that are governed by our “Book of Discipline” Guidelines, the NOW (Nurture/Outreach/Witness) Committee model for ministry is not bound by SAS guidelines.  So, anyone can engage at any time on our NOW Committees, which are designed for mission and ministry, and a pathway of discipleship to apostleship through:

    • Nurture — ministries that help make disciples and apostles to fulfill our vision and mission (through Membership Care and Support, Visitation, Sunday School, Bible Study, Worship, Youth Group, Small Groups, Prayer Groups, UMYF, UMM, UWF and more).
    • Outreach — mission that reaches beyond our local church into the community to make a difference for those in need (Food Pantry, Friendship Kitchen, etc.).
    • Witness — evangelism and renewal efforts to draw all people to Christ (connecting new members to the body of Christ at Eufaula First UMC).
    • Here are some important differences:

SAS LB uses Work Teams to accomplish governance goals and projects for a limited time.

NOW Committees are ongoing, designed to achieve our mission and vision goals.

SAS LB members are nominated to serve “3-year terms” by our Nominations Committee and elected at Charge Conference each year.

NOW Committee members are open to all individuals who are willing to serve on nurture, outreach and/or witness ministries (with unlimited “terms-of-service”).

How can you serve?  If you have an interest in serving on our …

  1. Work Teams’ - please Contact:  Tonya Venable (overseeing the Vision Work Team);  Patsy Kirk (overseeing our Fundraising Work Team);  Karen McCauley (overseeing Budget Alignment); and/or  Michael Taylor (overseeing Trustee Work Teams).
  2. N.O.W. Committees’ — please Contact:  Kate Kuykendall (Nurture Committee);  Margaret Kramer (Outreach/Friendship Kitchen) & Gail and Jim Shroyer (Outreach/Food Pantry).

If you wish to speak to our pastor regarding discernment of your gifts and graces for service in and through the body of Christ at Eufaula First UMC, please contact Pastor Michelle.

Grace and Peace, Pastor Michelle

Help Needed

We believe everyone is called to serve God's purpose, with each member of Christ’s Body acting as a minister. As Paul writes, the Spirit gives different gifts—wisdom, faith, healing, teaching, encouragement—for the good of all, uniting us as one church. Each gift strengthens our community and fulfills Christ’s teachings.

Now is a great time to reflect on your unique gifts and consider how you can support our congregation. Serving with humility—through prayer, presence, talents, service and witness - helps create an inviting and grace-filled environment. By sharing our gifts in unity, we build up the body of Christ and make a meaningful difference in others’ lives.

We welcome humble helpers for various needs:

  • church office tasks
  • Sunday School or youth
  • worship service roles (hospitality, ushers, tech support)
  • pastoral care (visitation, communion)
  • and more.

If you are interested in discipleship and outreach,

  • such as teaching
  • small groups
  • sports
  • mission projects

there are many opportunities for you to use your gifts and help our church thrive.

If you feel called or need more information, please contact Pastor Michelle!

Exciting News: Introducing QR Code Giving

Exciting News: Introducing QR Code Giving

We are proud to announce a new way to support the ministry and mission of our church through QR code giving. This new giving option provides a simple, secure, and convenient way for members, friends, and visitors to make a gift and help further the work of the church.

Through your generosity, our church is able to continue meaningful ministries that make a real difference in the lives of others, including Friendship Kitchen, the Food Pantry, and other outreach efforts that serve our community with compassion and love. These ministries are a vital part of who we are, and every gift helps strengthen our ability to care for neighbors in need and share the love of Christ in tangible ways.

We are excited to offer this new opportunity as we continue to grow in service, faith, and outreach. Thank you for your faithful support and for being part of the mission and ministry of our church.

To use the QR code, simply open the camera on your smartphone and hold it over the code below. A link should appear on your screen—tap that link to open our secure giving page, where you may choose to give to the General Offering or the Building Fund, either as a one-time gift or as a recurring gift.

FUMC Harvest Host Update

FUMC has been a Harvest Host for a little over two years, and it has been a wonderful experience. We currently have a 4.9‑star rating with 52 reviews, and our guests consistently leave very positive feedback. They especially appreciate our wide‑open, flat parking area and that the lot is well lit and feels safe.

We don’t always get the chance to meet our guests personally, but whenever I can, I try to leave them a small goodie bag when they arrive. These usually include things like scripture cards, bookmarks, snacks, bottled water, or sometimes an Upper Room devotional (even older editions — one guest specifically commented how meaningful that was). I also truly appreciate those who have taken time to visit our guests and welcome them; it’s always fun to hear where they’re traveling and to extend a little FUMC hospitality.

One of the great things about Harvest Hosts is that it costs the church nothing, the platform is very easy to manage, and it provides a meaningful way for FUMC to extend hospitality to people literally passing through our community.

Grace and peace,

Kelly Jordan

Food Pantry Update

The Food Pantry is open every Saturday from 11:30 - 1:00.

In addition to our $1,100 grant from UMC Communities Impacting Poverty Grant, we have recieved significant contribulations in food and cash donations from church members and the community.  We have also received twenty 30 pound boxes of food from Islamic Relief USA in honor of Ramadan.

It has been a joy to participate in this project. Our clients are delightful individuals who are exceptionally thankful for the food they recieve. They are very considerate about not taking too much so they can leave plenty for others in need. Many have stated that they didn’t ever think they would find themselves in such need and feel blessed to have a pantry to help them through the week!

Thank you to all of our congregation and community members for your continued support!! A special thank you to Teresa Bell, Sherri Tate, Martha McCracken, Karen & Vicki McCauley, and Susie and Curt Jurnigan  for assistance on Saturdays and filling in when Jim and Gail have been unavailable!!
